“Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.” —Psalms 119:105 NKJV
Why study the Bible? This is a question that a lot of people have asked; and I think it’s safe to say that they’re asking this question because they just simply don’t see the value in reading it. Of course, this is why it is often left on the shelf to collect dust. And as a result of not reading the Bible many people miss out on something wonderful…
You see, Bible study isn’t merely an activity to be carried out at certain times of the day, nor is the Bible a book to be read only when things aren’t going well with our lives and we’re looking for a quick fix answer to address our current situation. Rather, the study of the Bible marks the beginning of a journey into the heart and mind of Jesus Christ, and it is therefore a road map that leads to the discovery of God’s will and unfailing love for us. Indeed, the Bible not only defines who God is, it discloses what it means to love and serve Him, and to be united with each other in Jesus Christ. Hence its writings are a way of life and a light for living.
By studying the Bible and using it as a guide for decision making on moral issues you will soon discover that it has the influence and power to inspire positive changes within your life; and thus your eyes will be opened to what really ought to matter most to you. Moreover, it will give you hope for better things to come and healing to pave the way for the reception of a brighter future; for in its sacred pages you’ll find virtues by which to live and wisdom that has stood the test of time. But most importantly, you’ll find the testimony of Jesus Christ–the Way, the Truth, and the Life. That, alone, is enough to justify why we should study the Bible!
