“But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment. For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness” (1 Timothy 6:6-11 NASB).
It disgusts me to see how people have turned Christianity into a marketplace. Indeed, these wolves in sheep’s clothing profit handsomely from preaching a prosperity gospel, selling self-help books with Christian titles, charging exorbitant fees for doing seminars, and receiving monetary rewards for performing fake healings. The motto by which they live is, “What can I get out of it?” They think they are rich and increased with goods, and in need of nothing, but do not know that they are pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.
Sadly, they have managed to pull the wool over the eyes of many well intentioned people, manipulating them into believing that if they don’t give them their money, they won’t be blessed by God. Folks, these people are professional liars. Don’t fall for their nonsense.
Listen, a man can’t work for Christ without knowing Christ; and if he truly knows Christ, his work will be reflective of God’s love. He will produce good fruit as he proceeds to follow Jesus’ example, placing greater emphasis on the importance of living righteously than on filling up a collection plate.
Can you see the character of Christ shining in those who are claiming to speak on His behalf? If not, why would you continue to give them financial support? To support them in this way is to provide Satan with more monetary resources to deceive and to destroy. Stop feeding the devil!
If those who are asking for your money aren’t lifting up the truth as it is in Jesus, following His example by being meek and lowly in spirit, then you aren’t looking to the right people for godly counsel. Depart from them! They will only lead you down a path of destruction. Do you want to offer support to God’s church? Seek out those who are truly following Jesus’ example, and help them where they have a need.
Remember, just as you have a calling to be a light to the world, you also have a responsibility to spend your money wisely. Don’t give your money to worldly-minded frauds; rather, help those who are truly walking with God.
