Knowing that God Knows

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:6-7 KJV

A person who doesn’t pray is like a wanderer in a desert with nothing to quench their thirst; yet those who avail themselves of the power of prayer drink from living fountains of waters. Indeed, prayer is a way of acknowledging our need for God, who is our refuge and strength and a very present help in times of trouble. (Psalms 46:1) Of course, it isn’t necessary for us to pray to God to let Him know who we are or what we need. He can read the heart as an open book, and already knows what we need even before we ask it. Yet when tragedy strikes there’s a tendency to forget these things. People often assume that God has forgotten them, while failing to remember that the Bible makes it very clear that those who believe in Jesus Christ will face challenges in life and much opposition to their faith. Nevertheless, the outcome will surely prove that God is faithful to supply all their needs.

“Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” – Matthew 6:25-33 KJV

Indeed, these words ring true with a message that assures us that there’s no need to worry about anything when seeking first God’s kingdom and righteousness. For God will supply our needs. Perhaps not in ways that we might expect it, but our needs will be met nonetheless. Every one of them! Are you worried about paying your bills? Don’t be. Are you worried about losing your job? Don’t be. Are you worried about not having enough money to eat? Don’t be. Even if you end up or are in what appears to be a very bad situation, your life is in good hands, because you believe in Jesus Christ. So, don’t worry; God will take good care of you. He won’t abandon you; not even for a moment!

And by the way, it isn’t necessary to witness something miraculous in order to know that God is with you. God’s ability to communicate with us is not limited by our understanding of how we think He should interact with us. He has many ways in which to communicate His mysteries to us; and it would do us well to take heed to the following words: “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” – Jeremiah 33:3 KJV

But here’s something else to consider: If God already knows what we need before we ask, then why pray at all? Well, prayer isn’t something that we do because God doesn’t know what we need; rather, it is needful for us to pray because we can’t walk with God without being in fellowship with Him. In other words, as you continue to open the door of your heart to God through prayer, your awareness of His presence will deepen. Thus, you will become more attuned to recognizing that His hand of love is guiding you every step of the way, throughout your life.

So, the next time you pray to God, don’t pray in such a way as to give the impression that He isn’t already aware of what you need, or that He’s blind to the fact that you exist; rather, take some time to be silent and think about how He has led you in the past, and then praise Him for how He is leading you in the present to better things which He has prepared for you. Open the door of your heart to the promptings of the Holy Spirit and receive God’s message of love to you, knowing that He already knows it all.
