“The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time”—Abraham Lincoln

I don’t think that you could find too many people who would disagree with the idea that it is good to plan for the future. After all, it really isn’t a bad idea, and more people should be doing it. However, one thing that you need to keep in mind while planning in this way is that what you plan to do ten years from now may turn out to be something that you’ll have no desire for ten years into the future. That being said, what sense is there in worrying about being in a specific place ten years from now when at some point, you might want to be somewhere else instead?
I know that I can certainly speak from experience on this as there have been times when I worried about planning for things which later proved to have nothing to do with what I really wanted out of life. In other words, circumstances change, and with that there comes a change in perspective. That is, what you might have significantly valued at one stage in your life may not have as much value to you later on, because the need for it is no longer as large as you had first thought.
The bottom line here is that we need to take life in steps, not in leaps. By taking the time that is needed to see the moment for what it really is, we will take in and experience the wealth that wisdom would soon teach us about it. Thus we will worry less about future prospects and concentrate more on enjoying life as we move at a reasonable pace. It’s good to dream, but we must wake up at some point too, and see reality for what it is.
I will say this however; the greatest and most important preparation that should be implemented is that which has to do with consecrating the heart to God. For there will come a point in time when every soul will stand before the throne of God and give an account for the life that they have lived. Therefore, let’s give our cares to the LORD and let Him handle our future. After all, He knows what’s best, and will never fail to deliver on His promises.
“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:25-33 NKJV)
