Has anyone ever asked you what your sign is? If so, perhaps you’ve said something such as, Cancer, or Libra, or Aries, or Taurus, or Leo, etc… Of course, I am referring to Astrology, which is defined as:
“divination based on the supposed influence of the stars upon human events.” – Webster’s New Dictionary of The English Language
Strangely, some professing Christians put their trust in astrology by reading daily horoscopes. Does it really make sense for a Christian to do this? Should we look to the stars for answers on matters concerning what the future holds for our lives? Do the stars know who we are and what will become of us day by day?
Here’s something to consider:
“Modern astrologers base their predictions on the location of the constellations of the zodiac, not as they appear today, but as they appeared in the days of the second-century astronomer, Claudius Ptolemaus! As a result of the “precession of the equinoxes” since the second century, people who astrologers say are born under the sign of Libra, for example, are really born under Virgo. Modern astrology attempts to regulate our lives by the constellations according to the positions that they would have been in had we been born seventeen hundred years ago! In spite of its detailed scientific terminology, modern astrology is not based on good astronomy.
Furthermore its predictions are not supported by observable evidence. According to astrology, Aries and Scorpio are the signs under which soldiers are born, but an exhaustive test of 154,000 Marine reenlistments in the United Sates has shown that persons born under Aries and Scorpio are no more likely to become soldiers than so-called peace-loving Librans. Librans, according to astrology, are supposed to become musicians and painters. A study of 2000 artists has not supported this idea either.” – Mervyn Maxwell, God Cares Volume One – The Message of Daniel
It shouldn’t be too difficult to see that astrology is an inconsistent philosophy that can not be trusted.
Only our Father in heaven knows the end from the beginning. It is better that we place our trust in Him. After all, He made us, and knows everything about us, who we are, and where we’re headed. He can even read our hearts as an open book!
Remember the former things long past, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me, Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things which have not been done, Saying, ‘My purpose will be established, And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’ (Isaiah 46:9-10 NASB)
You are wearied with your many counsels; Let now the astrologers, Those who prophesy by the stars, Those who predict by the new moons, Stand up and save you from what will come upon you. Behold, they have become like stubble, Fire burns them; They cannot deliver themselves from the power of the flame; There will be no coal to warm by Nor a fire to sit before! (Isaiah 47:13-14 NASB)
Notice how God doesn’t have kind things to say about astrologers. In fact, He detests their practices.
There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to Yahweh, and because of these abominations, Yahweh, your God, drives them out from before you. (Deuteronomy 18:10-12)
So what does this say about Christians delving into astrology? What does this say about Christians looking to horoscopes for answers? Well, it is obvious that our Father in heaven doesn’t approve of such practices, and neither should we.
The next time someone asks you what your sign is, you can tell them that your sign is obedience to the Word of Yahweh, which instructs us not to look to the stars for answers, but to seek wisdom from Him who created the stars and put them in the sky!
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
(James 1:5 NASB)
