There you were at a high point in life feeling good about your relationship with God and what He has done through you. Suddenly, you heard a loud knock at the door. “Who could it be?” you wondered. With a smile you opened the door, only to find an angry face with piercing eyes.
A whirlwind of cutting words began to come at you hard, striking you at the heart of where it hurts the most. Mistakes you’ve made in the past surfaced as the person who felt entitled to judge you ripped you to shreds. The warm feelings you had before opening the door have now become a thing of the past. The joy is gone! Now what do you do?
I am weary with my groaning; All night I make my bed swim; I drench my couch with my tears. My eye wastes away because of grief; It grows old because of all my enemies. Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity; For the LORD has heard the voice of my weeping. The LORD has heard my supplication; The LORD will receive my prayer. Let all my enemies be ashamed and greatly troubled; Let them turn back and be ashamed suddenly. (Psalm 6:6-10 NKJV)
No doubt, people can be cruel at times and say some very harsh things to others, thinking they’re scathing remarks are justified simply because they call themselves Christians. But what they fail to see is that they’re spiritually assaulting people whom Jesus loves and wants to build up. They are blind to this because a veil of pride is covering their eyes.
It’s important to understand that people who abuse others often do so as a way of coping with their own insecurities. Because their lives are filled with negativity, they take their frustration out on those around them, thus becoming the source of their own pain to someone else. In other words, they hurt others where they themselves are hurting. Thus, they have become what they despise, and don’t even know it! You might think you’re the problem, but it’s really their perspective on life that’s problematic: they are negative people.
So what do you do when people trash you? When they speak wrongfully about you? When they try to put false guilt on you? When they take your heart’s cry for help and crush it in their hands?
Look to Jesus!
Don’t let negative people poison your mind. For if you let them in, they’ll rob you of your happiness. Perhaps you’re in a place of hurt, feeling broken inside because someone has treated you like yesterday’s trash. Is there any assurance that life can be what it was before you lost your sense of self worth? Will things get better?
I’ve got good news for you!
Not only will Jesus restore your joy, He will make all things new.
Give your brokenness to Him, and He will heal your wounded heart. The past is behind you. Why return to it when you have a fresh start in Christ?
Granted, you can’t turn the pain off like a light switch. But you can certainly counter it with God’s promises. Sure, some wounds can leave scars. But just because you have scars, it doesn’t mean you have to keep hurting.
Give your burdens to Jesus. He’s waiting for you and knows exactly what to do to make your life better. Call on Him now.
