Not Cursed but Blessed

by Christopher S. Esty on February 6, 2009

“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” – 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 KJV

The following video is of a man who says that he will put a curse on anyone who speaks a word against his ministry:

Is this something that you would expect to hear coming from the mouth of a servant of Jesus Christ?  Did Jesus give this man His approval to put curses on people?  Obviously not, because by pronouncing this curse on others in this way he clearly disclosed that he was not being obedient to the Word of God, because Jesus had said,

“Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.” – Luke 6:28 KJV

Now then, does it really make any sense for a person to curse someone in the name of Jesus Christ when Jesus made it very clear that we should bless those who curse us? Obviously not!

Ungodly utterances should not be feared; and no message should be given respect when it is contrary to what Jesus Christ has told us.

With that said, I would like to address, which I believe to be very important, as some are wrestling with the idea that a person could be cursed in Christ. Perhaps you’ve heard of something like this before or maybe you even thought you were the victim of such a curse at one time. Then again, you might even believe that you are cursed right now. Whatever the case may be, I think that it would be best for us to go to the Bible to find out if it is possible for a Christian to be cursed in Christ.

“Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.” – Matthew 5:10-11 KJV

According to Jesus’ words, if you are living a righteous life in Him then you are blessed. For how else could people speak all manner of evil against you falsely for His sake if you aren’t living righteously in Him? You see, if you are truly suffering for doing what is right before God, then the persecution that you are facing is a sure sign of possessing God’s blessing. Not a curse. Moreover, since Jesus instructs us to bless those who curse us it is therefore evident that you can’t do this if you are accursed. For you can only bless if you are blessed because the act of blessing someone else results from sharing something with them that you already possess, that is, God’s blessing. So don’t think that just because you are going through hardship that that means you are accursed. It could very well be possible that your suffering is the result of being blessed.

Still not convinced?

Take a look at this:

“Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” – Genesis 12:1-3 KJV

Indeed, this passage makes the point very clear that those who are of the seed of Abraham are blessed. And who is of the seed of Abraham? Those who by faith receive Jesus Christ into their hearts are of the seed of Abraham. For the Bible says: “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” (Galatians 3:26-29 KJV)

Note: God made it very clear to Abraham that those who curse His people will be cursed, which means the one who tries to curse you has no power or authority over, and can not therefore steal God’s blessing away from you by attempting to curse you. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t forfeit your blessing by giving a person power and authority over your life by allowing them to rule over you in an ungodly way. It’s when you refuse to walk in obedience to Jesus Christ that you subject yourself to the power and authority of Satan. For in doing this you are essentially throwing God’s blessing away. And if you have any doubts about this, then you need to take a closer look at something that God had said about Abraham:

“Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.” – Genesis 26:3-5 KJV

Abraham was blessed by God because he exercised faith in His Word by living in obedience to all that God commanded of him–a blessing that is given to all who walk according to the ways of God. Therefore if we desire to be blessed by God, then we, like Abraham, will seek to walk in obedience to Him. For this is what it means to be blessed. That being said, if anyone is truly cursed then that can only mean one thing: that person is not living in obedience to God. For only those who speak against God’s people can be cursed; and they are cursed not merely because they speak against His people, but because they have rejected His holy way.

Now let’s think about this for a moment: if they are cursed by God as a result of trying to curse you, then how can you be cursed too? It makes no sense to conclude that God would allow you to be cursed if He is going to curse those who curse you. Likewise, it doesn’t make sense to conclude that you can be both blessed and cursed at the same time. For if you are blessed you can’t be cursed; for to be cursed is to not be blessed.

If you are truly walking with God and are going through hardship right now, it’s not because you are cursed; rather, it is because you are suffering persecution or oppression as a result of being blessed. And you should praise God for this because you are suffering for the sake of righteousness. And if you are suffering for the sake of righteousness then that could mean only one thing: you are in Christ Jesus! And you know that Christ is not cursed, but blessed. Hence you can’t be in Him and be cursed at the same time. You can only be blessed in Christ because He is blessed.

Listen, the devil wants you to believe that you are cursed because he is merely attempting to use fear as a means to break the hold that you have on Jesus Christ. In other words, he wants you to believe that Christ is not capable of shielding you from evil. In this way he makes himself look like he is greater than Christ. But he is not even equal to Jesus Christ, which means he can’t have any more power or authority over your life than what you give to him. After all, the devil is a created being just like you and me, and has no authority or power over Jesus Christ. It is fear that allows him to have a hold on us in this way; and it is fear that often causes us to break God’s commandments. So if you are not living in obedience to God it is either because you just simply don’t want to or because you are living in fear of something.

“think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.” – 1 Peter 4:12-13 KJV

In other words, don’t let fear have such control over your life. Instead, cast all of your cares on Jesus Christ, believing that He cares for you. Give Satan no ground to rule over you. Break the hold that he has on you by submitting your entire life to Jesus Christ, renouncing all that you are holding onto that is not approved by God and fully committing your life to living in obedience to Him. For to be of the seed of Abraham is to walk in obedience to God just like Abraham did—obeying God’s ‘voice’, and keeping His ‘charge’ and ‘commandments’ and ‘statutes’ and ‘laws’.

If Satan tries to use fear as a means to crush your faith in Jesus, then tell him that you will no longer let him own you, and then command him to depart from you in the name of Jesus Christ! Remember, he must subject himself to the authority of Jesus. For all authority has been given to Jesus Christ in heaven and on earth. (Matt. 28:18) Therefore believe in the power and authority of Jesus Christ; claim His promises; and remind those little devils who like to curse others who is really in charge of your life, and they will flee from you. But you must believe! You must claim the power that Jesus Christ has given you to stand against Satan and overcome the world.

Does this mean you will never see Satan’s ugly face again? No. What it means is that you can be sure that even though you are going through hardship you are blessed because you have chosen to live your life for Jesus Christ. And when the LORD pours out His wrath on the wicked in the Day of Judgment, to bring them to their knees and destroy them, you will remain standing, because you are blessed in Jesus Christ. When that happens everyone will see very clearly who is and isn’t cursed!
