Books of the Bible in Chronological Order – Helpful Resources

by Christopher S. Esty on January 9, 2009

I can still hear the words echoing in my mind: ‘Pay attention to the context!’ This was something that my biblical Hebrew professor often stressed to his students while I attended college. For when it comes to understanding the Bible, identifying the context is essential. After all, without context you really can’t grasp the underlying point of what you are reading, which means you will likely miss out on a lot of important details that you should know to read the Bible in a more meaningful way. And since much of what is written in the Bible is historical, one of the best ways to make it easier to grasp the context of what is written in it is to read the Bible chronologically.

That being said, I would like to save you some time, and perhaps even some money, by providing you with a few references that I believe will prove to be very helpful to you if you have a desire to take your study of the Bible to the next level by reading it Chronologically.

Note: Providing you with these references doesn’t mean I endorse everything that is on these websites.

The following reference is the best that I have seen thus far when it comes to listing the books of the Bible in chronological order. I especially like the placement of the Psalms!

A Chronology of the Bible Time-line

A well organized resource to provide you with a time-line of the events that took place as recorded in the Bible: Bible Timeline

The author obviously put a great deal of time and effort into this!

Closing Comments:

I hope that you will find the resources that I have shared with you here to be helpful. Indeed, they are few in number, but that is only because I want to give you the best of what I have seen.  I feel that it is important to provide you with resources that will be useful rather than bombard you with a plethora of links to sites that you will likely not use.

By the way, although it is true that reading the books of the Bible in chronological order is very helpful when it comes to identifying context, knowing how to study the Bible is vital to our relationship with God.  Therefore, I would like to share three basic but powerful rules with you that will bring Bible study to life for you.
